One of the best ways to deal with fear is to start a journal. It’s the place and space where you can explore them, research them and evaluate how realistic they are.
It can be scary to do a huge thing. For example, go on a trip across the country alone, speak in front of people, finish your first big project for public consumption and so forth. The way to deal with the fear of facing you is to develop a process that enables you to work in small steps. When you do things one day at a time and one step at a time you can overcome a lot of fear. And this is where a journal can help you develop a process.
Because all to often we fear we aren’t good enough and everything has to be perfect but there is no such thing as perfection. In your journaling write about who you can accept where it doesn’t have to be perfect but that it got done in the first place. No you don’t have to put out garbage but it does mean that you let go of controlling the outcome of everything.
The thing I think we often tend to do is compare ourselves to others and that we are alone in being not enough but the here’s the thing, everyone feels inadequate sometimes. It’s a normal!
What you can do for yourself is to let go of the feeling of inadequacy by showing yourself how it’s a lie. Write down any lie that you’ve been telling yourself, or someone else has been telling you, (or anxiety is telling you). And then journal about how this is not true. Become a detective and find the evidence!
But I also think it’s important to allow yourself to fear the fear that you have. This is the shadow side of things that has to rise up so that you can then take one small step forward. For example, if you’re afraid to speak in front of people plan to join Toast Masters so that you can dip your toe in. Slowly work your way up to the type of public speaking you want to do.
