4 Things about starting a business

I would love to start off this post by saying that starting and having your own business is full of bliss and glory but also a lot of frustration.

When I first ventured into the business 13 years ago, I for sure believed and thought this would be a cakewalk, and in part that dreamer in me is certainly responsible for that. But the practical and logical person that resides within, knew better.

And I want to share with you, some things that I have learned over the years when it comes to starting a business. I have had a few of them, some of them complete and utter failure – not because my heart wasn’t in it, but I was not working from my zone of genius – that thing I am so damn good at and that I could do all day long without batting an eye.

If you are thinking that started a business is perfect for you, read on because the next few tips will help you get on the track of knowing and doing what you love.

Know your Talents, Skills, and Knowledge

Take a piece of paper and make a list of all the things you are good at. Then next to it make a list of all the skills you have mastered and the knowledge you have gained – in life, work and going to school. Even if you are self-taught, this will help you find your zone of expertise.

This can include anything from being super self-disciplined, creative, technical, and your education. Maybe it’s having a unique perspective, overcoming challenges and having a killer mindset. Or maybe you are awesome at building websites, behind the scenes work or making things like painting or other art skills.

Acknowledge your weakness

This is so not a bad thing. I used to think it is but knowing the areas of where you could use more support will work in your favor as you are laying out your business. For example, even though I have a degree in Accounting, I am not great at tracking money. Being aware of this, gives me a few options a) find a system that works for me or b) outsourced to someone who loves doing this.

Self-awareness is the key to your success. The more you are aware, the more you what you need to, can do and want to do. If accounting isn’t your thing, and you don’t really want to find a system that works, then you already know outsourcing is going to be the thing.

But let’s say consistency isn’t up your alley, then hiring someone to hold you accountable may be the strategy you need.

What makes your heart sing?

Now, how do you tie your strength and weakness into something that you cannot stop thinking about and you would do it for free if it wasn’t for the fact you need to live?

Years ago, I had a book-keeping business because despite being dyslexic, I was good with all the details of debits and credits, creating spreadsheets and so on. But I didn’t love it. I struggle sitting behind the desk for hours on end, get tired and my energy bottoms out.

However, when it comes to helping people go after their dreams, taking action and holding them accountable, now that lights me up like a firecracker and my energy is… well a high that is hard to explain.

I also love helping people with some technical aspects i.e. link their opt-in to their newsletter, edit website pages, build websites – but this isn’t something I would want to do all day long either – ha. It’s just something I am good at and I don’t mind helping here and there.

But what about you?

What gets you so excited that you can’t stop thinking about in the morning or when you go to bed?

What gives you that “energetic high” that lights you up from the inside out.

What would feel like a dream come true if you could make money with that dream?

Take a moment and reflect on that ultimate dream and give yourself permission that it is possible.

I would love to hear from you what business you’ve started or like to start.
